Color Hold a Video File Online

Why color hold a video file online?

The Color Hold filter (often referred to as Selective Color or Color Pass) is a striking post-production effect that desaturates the majority of a scene into black-and-white while keeping a specific hue vibrant and untouched. You should use this tool when you want to force the viewer's perspective, isolating a key narrative element—like a red umbrella in a grey storm or a yellow taxi on a dark street—to ensure it cannot be ignored. By eliminating the distraction of surrounding colors, you not only create a sophisticated, high-contrast aesthetic but also attach intense symbolic importance to the subject, instantly guiding the audience’s focus to exactly where the emotional or narrative weight of the story lies.

Example of the color hold effect on sintel.

You can color hold a video file using your web browser at http://webmconverter.app you just simply need to select your video file from the interface using the select button on the correct video conversion page.

Select video file from storage device

In this example i used the video converter at https://webmconverter.app/mkv-to-webm once you have selected your video file the video information will be displayed.

If the video file was correctly detected then you should scroll down to the organized video filters section below and select the "colorhold - Remove all colors except for one" filter press add and enable it, then the configuration of the video filter will be shown.

These are the settings i used to create the effect of the example shown above, but every circumstance will be different.

I used a screenshot of the video stream which can be extracted using a video player or at https://webmconverter.app/screenshot-extractor if the format is supported. Then i took a sample of my desired color using the eye dropper tool from The Gimp.

The gimp eye dropper tool

You need to the the Hexadecimal representation of the color for the color hold filter, in this case it was #EAB088. Which was selected from the characters face.

Once you are happy with the color selection you need to figure out what the Similarity setting should be, i chose 0.22 but every instance will be different it's best to truncate your video file first to a few seconds and do a trial and error to figure out the best setting.

If you would like to generate the image from the example above enter the truncation values From:   00:03:24 and To: 00:03:24 which will get two seconds of video. The sintel video file can be found all over the internet.
